Start Seedlings Indoors

Check your seed packets. Do the instructions tell you to start the seeds indoors some number of weeks before the last frost date?
According to NCDC-NOAA, most of Connecticut has a 10% probability of temperatures of 28 degrees F after 5/1. Some higher elevations, especially in the north, have that probability after 5/15. While these are not promises, they are dates we can use to estimate seed starting times.
12 weeks before 5/1 is 2/6. If your seed packets or other instructions tell you to plant indoors 12 weeks before the last frost, then 2/6 is your day!
The Heirloom Minnesota Midget melons I will be trying this year need to be started indoors 1 week before the last frost and set out 2 to 3 weeks afterward. So, I need to plant them on 4/24 and set them out by 5/22.
If this is your first year starting seeds, read up on the important basics online or in a gardening book. Temperature, soil, water, and distance between light and seedlings can all make the difference between healthy or lost plants. Once you get the main concepts, you will, I hope, have a great sense of satisfaction from starting your own seeds.
