Natural Resource Management and Gardens

Everyone, whether you realize it or not, manages natural resources. You do it every time you turn on a faucet, mow a lawn, rake leaves, add something to the compost pile, put in a sidewalk or water the indoor plants.

Often, you may not be aware of what you are managing for. In fact, you may be managing for a result that will not please you in the long run.

Here is an example:

Perhaps you had some trees cut down for a better view out the window. You were managing for a lovely view. But now the house gets so hot during the summer, and after a heavy rain, you have water problems near the house. The trees were shading the house and drawing moisture out of the soil.

Was it a mistake to take down the trees? It was probably not a mistake. But the trees were doing more than obstructing the view, and need to be replaced with something that can shade or cool the house and deal with ponding water.

Would a trellis with grapevines or clematis look nice in front of the house? Would a tree species that is tall and narrow like a hybrid poplar provide shade and keep from spreading across the view? Perhaps a simple rain garden, with flowering plants and low-growing shrubs would manage runoff water beautifully.
