Vermiculite versus Charcoal

This is one of those projects on my "try this" list.

Prepare planting mix (Mel's Mix) using peat moss, compost and coarse vermiculite.

Prepare planting mix substituting clean hardwood charcoal for vermiculite.

Plant identical plants, identical age, with exactly the same light and moisture conditions and monitor their growth.

What will happen? Will some species behave differently?
